When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Technical Caches

Post by Iain Miller » Sat Mar 01, 2014 10:37 pm

There was a thread on here called Extreme Caches, I did post on that thread but alas it got zapped. (not by me, I hasten to add)

Anyways,

I am in the process of placing a series of 12 caches.

The first four are view points with very scenic and slightly long walk ins, (inc. Possibly the most point of land on mainland Ireland) these four are sorted and went live yesterday.

The next four are being placed on remote storm beaches, http://www.uniqueascent.ie/sp/directory ... nlough-bay, involving mountaineering guile and near 1000ft descents to sea level, ropes not required but the potential for epics is reasonably high. These will be live in approx 10 days.

The final four are perhaps where things get emotional, these are being placed on the summits of these islands (sea stacks), EG http://www.uniqueascent.ie/sp/directory ... oc-na-mara. What is involved to get these caches will be type of activity, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3ZtlI_ebx4 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llFHTEhcwNM. These will be live over the summer.

Anyways that's the cunning plan, how many visits these caches get is quite unlikely to be many, but where is the adventure in always doing roadside cache and dashes? :D

Very interesting. If they weren't so far away from me I would certainly attempt it. Or it might make me take a trip out there some time, it looks pretty amazing.

I see you were first to ascend some (all?) of the climbs. What grades are we talking about? VS or higher? And is a boat/ kayak required?

Unfortunately I think the finders for these would be extremely low in number, but I know there are a few climbers who also geocache so it's possible.

Will be over near Westport at Easter... so you never know -- might give these a crack.
Also - The photos above do look vaguely familiar... Refer to this simple little epic:

Always good to see some more extreme and challenging caches... just bear in mind you have to maintain them! Caches like Casana are only found rarely in Dublin so expect these, sadly, to only get a few finds. If any :( Sadly GC47YR2 is approaching a year now and hasn't been found.

What's rare is wonderful :D !

Casana Rock was placed in 2010 and had one logged visit that year. One more in 2011, nothing in 2012 and one group visit in 2013. I've spent more time on placement and maintenance runs out there than cachers have spent logging it !

Isolation (GC47YR2) and Smuggler's Cove (GC47YPM) are on my 'hit-list' for this year. If we can manage a family camping break in Tramore, the kayak will come too and I'll be heading out to have a go at one or both of these.

GC2GZ1W Castle Island cache, near Baltimore, was placed in October 2010 and lay there until being first logged in July 2011. And then had 3 more logs the following day ! And no more until June 2012.

When we logged Ireland's Eye in 2009, the previous 'Found' log had been 13 months previously.

GCZZG4 Carraig Dá Bheola has been logged just once since placed in 2007. Well, 3 logs, but all as part of one group visit. I did the hard work on this 2 years ago, but was unable to close it out with locating GZ.

What's rare is wonderful :D !

Spotted this one in Kerry this year, but tide wasn't co-operating...
GC4DZ7E - I did get a good view of it from the cliff above the stack. Reminded of it by this potential series - it's definitely a contender!

This wee sea cliff feature has to be seen to be believed. :D

But not a sea stack yet perhaps another 1000 years?

The first of the offshore series has been placed, http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC531GB_tent-stack.

A person with suitable mountaineering guile and nautical knowledge would get this cache without rope or getting too wet. 8)
