When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Aussie Moveable Cache in Ireland!

G'Day All,

Just in case anyone is interested in something a little bit different I thought I'd let you know about a special cache I have just placed in Co. Wicklow!

In Australia we have the Geocaching Australia website. It started exactly like this Forum but then expanded into a listing site to extend the Caching experience down under as can be very restrictive. It is in the same vein as Anyway, as part of our Summer games we have been running "The GeGnome Project"... and one of the little guys has come with me to Ireland! Yesterday we found GC43: Europe's First together which was very exciting.

Now he has taken up residence nearby to that cache and awaits his next fnder. You can just log a find like usual (On GCA, not GC) but he is actually a MOVEABLE cache. The whole point is you find him, TAKE HIM, and rehide him for the next finder somewhere else :D As will be evident the usual rules do not apply, but you should be sensible and legal with the palcement. If he doesnt move I will pick him up at the end of the year. If you are interested and need help, contact me. Hell, if you want to hide your own Moveable cache (or webcam, virtual, locationless, along with the other normal caches) why not check out GCA? :P

That's my plug. Hopefully someone gets Gneddy (details here...). Especially if you are returning to Australia! Cheers :D

Bumpety Bump! :D

A few of the guys at the Event today in Dublin were interested in the Geocaching Australia GeGnome who is a movable cache hiding near "Europe's First" in Bray. Here are the details again.

If you want to hide a movable yourself no problems listing one ;) haha

Will be interested to see if he gets found before I have to take him home in December!

Here is the cache page again... Gneddy Gnome
