When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

I have hear they are going to try to get two mega events in the main land after the one in Wales, if this does happen then this could happen every year. Two events in the main land would make it less likely people would travel over and I think we would struggle to get the numbers needed.
I think we might need to wait until we have 400 to 500 cachers in the North and the South of Ireland before we could do this.
I know we could arrange this no problem the problem will be getting the numbers.
I agree with what Beefy has said it does need to be special.
I think we would have no trouble getting funding for the venue and help towards the events, I also have some great ideas to raise money to fund the rest.

As GC see Ireland as a whole, all caches placed in the north say they are in Ireland would they see an event here as Ireland or the UK or either?

they might be talking about doing 2 but this would still mean the one in Ireland would be 1 of 2 not a third one.

I see what you are saying Loz about waiting to get enough cachers in Ireland so you are just relying on them but even the Mega's over here rely on people travelling from other states and countries to get the big numbers that some of them do. Not so sure if has to be so oirish as beefy has suggested, when people come to Ireland they get a totally different experience than anywhere else in general. To be fair I see more Silly Irishness over here than I ever witnessed in Ireland.

As for getting a special icon for it there is no chance. That would set a precedent that groundspeak would not wish to maintain.

As for there being 2 Mega Events in the UK, in 2012. Well One Organising Committee has been at work fund raising and venue searching for 12 months. The other? Well who knows, one person keeps popping up and mentioning organising a Mega, but has yet to mention any firm plans. But even so, opinion is that 2 Mega Events in the UK so close to each other time wise. Will severely affect the attendance numbers for both.

You've already got 37 bodies [remember you need 500 bodies and not accounts for Mega Status] willing to cross the Water to Attend a Irish Mega. The numbers keep going up.

If you did commit to organising a Mega in 2014, the chances are you'd not get a UK Committee going against you.

The response sound goods - but a total of 45 maybes will not justify it, that said, i think the numbers would be achieved.

but - what would happen, if a MEGA was to take place and the pre-req 500 did not turn up - is it just another event. i think the money raising would be the least of the troubles as there is still plenty of cross-border funding available.

Just another thought from a completly unbaised viewpoint  I know that the new Mayor of Derry/Londonderry would be very keen to attract this sort of event, having secured a stopover for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in 2012 and City Of Culture in 2013. You could find that the money would be available without too much negotiating.

Added us as well - I noted over there that Stenaline can offer discounted travel for big group bookings - the Mini Club of Ireland got a good deal travelling to Silverstone last year for a big event and there were only 10 or so cars. :)

Just looking at GC43 - Europe's First and seeing the number of logs that cache has gathered over the years from visiting cachers it might be another "marketing tool" to use when promoting any event on the island! :)

Will there be a Mega Event in Ireland in 2014?
I think some German Geocachers will surely attend, when the event will take place during summer holiday time. 8)
And don´t you think, that lots of scotish, welsh and english geocachers will attend?
Me I would do everything to fly over from Germany to attend. :D

It might seem strange to bump this up, but what was the point of making another thread. I personally believe Ireland are fully capable of hosting a mega event. With a not so bad transport system, and routes to both American, European and Middle Eastern Routes from Dublin, Ireland are fully capable. Over 200 people from Ireland have geocached in the last week, and over 800 in the past month. In the past month we've had 1363 people geocaching in Ireland, suggesting over 500 foreigners have geocached here in the month.

http://project-gc.com/Statistics/Overview

For locals in Ireland there are rail links connecting all the major cities and towns via rail meaning that lots of people could attend. Also there are ferries that come from Britain and France.

I'll probably be attacked for saying this (:-D) but there's no harm in a suggestion, right?

Well considering 3 things

1. People would be attracted to a country's first mega rather than the 5th American or the 3rd Swiss or whatever.
2. People will be visiting Ireland anyway. It is a top holiday and many people may have booked their holiday here before a mega was even published.
3. Ryanair :-)

I'd fully agree with that. However I can't think of anywhere that would have enough capacity for 500+ people in Bray, either outdoors or indoors that spring to mind.
