When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

I really hope they weren't as well - yet another instance of why I have so much respect for RNLI volunteers though!

I've had that cache planned to do for quite a while, but everytime I get round to 'I'm doing it tomorrow' the weather turns rubbish :( - I'll get out there one of these days!

Doh, I have done that one, and its predecessor that used to be at the top of the island as well.

I was thinking of the nearby GC12M02 South Island Cache ......

Well I did put a warning about the tides on the cache listing!!!!

Some people just don't read the warning signs! There are two of them on the way out to the island and one in the carpark!

The longest you'd be stuck there is an hour maybe two at best depending on the tide height and wind direction. I could think of worse places to be stranded!

Re: "Crown of Rough Island" the tides the last thing I'd be worried about on that one! I'd be more concerned about the contents of someone's chemical toilet that they've dumped at GZ!!! Yuk!!!! :-x

Re: "South Island Cache" Definitely get your tide times right for that one! You've nowhere to escape out there if it does catch you out! As for the cache on Chapel Island, it's fairly safe at the moment! It's still sitting in my garage!!!!
"Wait a minute, Doc. Ah... Are you telling me that you built a time machine... out of a DeLorean?"

Anyone who gets stuck out there really only has themselves to blame, you really have tried to warn people (and as you said, its not like there's not enough signs around the place!) Its a gorgeous place to go out to, when you aren't having to worry about the water heading back in (I remember racing around when I went out to do the old Islandhill cache as I knew I was on the edge of the tide and did get slightly 'damp' on the way back over the causeway :-$ - was better planned when I went to do yours  )

LOL @ Going to the Chapel cache being in your garage - I might be more inclined to give it a go if I'm not worried about sinking up to my knees in sand    I've been emming and ahhing about doing those caches for the past two summers, but every time I finally decided to go out, it would rain (maybe someone is trying to tell me something :D :D ) - will probably wait off until the arch work is finished on Chapel Island now!

you could probably replace that container while it's there
