When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Working on updating the website. If you have any interesting ideas on content, post them here.

Just a suggestion, I am sure you probably have discussed this before, but how about a monthly ladder board, with geocacher of the month, and possibly geocacher of the year, with a small prize for the winner?

How do you mean?
If you mean the number of caches found per month ... then duck quick!!
Some people are going to nark about how it's not all about the numbers
(Even though there is a website dedicated to just that)
Plus, the same person will win it most months ... his name would be Mr Windsockers.
If I remember correctly, Hezekiah posted that Windsockers got 178 in 7 hours on his last US visit.
I don't think we'll be matching that here any time soon

Must say that I agree with the idea in principal and it need not be in relation to numbers at all. Most people seem to go through a stage or stages where the numbers seem important and at other times they concentrate perhaps on geography (counties, countries etc), or good walks or unusual sites and most of us have periods of varying length when we don't look for caches at all. There is also the fact that placing caches can be very innovative or clever so there are a number of factors that can determine who would deserve kudos.
So, a winner could be for example:
The most unusual cache found in the month.
The best or most humorous log.
The cleverest cache placing.
Or indeed something like Steve's 178 which is a bit unusual of course.
The best series placed.
The best puzzle placed.
Someone maybe trying for ages and eventually gets a difficult puzzle cache.

Only problem is who would decide the outcome??? #-o

What I was thinking of was more an Irish cache ladder, just for people here, they could submit their finds, and it could update itself, and yes, it would relate to numbers, but there could be one for fun caches, riddles etc. It would generate interest in the Irish caches and interest in this website in general..I dono,, maybe it's too much work for the moderators?

Just an idea :P

Reviews of suppliers would be helpful, even just a link list

Ireland-specific cache rules (ie stance on yew trees in graveyards)

Who's who

I think it's a great idea to update the website. You have banners in a lot of cache descriptions on geocaching.com but apart from the forum all website content is obviously out of date (at least it seems like this because of the date stamps on the articles).

I have no idea of the format of the site and what options you have to give members write access to update different areas. If it were some sort of community blogging system we all could contribute as time allows and the site owners could concentrate on moderating the site content.

When I went to San Francisco end of October last year I came a cross a useful website from the Geocachers of the Bay Area http://www.thegba.net/index.php. We certainly have a lot of foreign visitors to Ireland who would benefit from a bookmark list feature. With a lot of us being non-nationals we could with a bit of effort even provide general information in different languages.

We could also have a leaderboard on Irish challenges (similar to this one maintained by the Canada Capital Cachers in Ottawahttp://binthair.mikron.ca/. I would love to have a similar challenge here.

Another idea would be a monthly list of "New Irish Caches". Or if you're really addicted you might want to read other people's blogs about their geocaching adventures so a linklist would come in handy.

How about a 2010 Irish Geocoin? There are so many things we could do to make the website a really got starting point for all things caching in Ireland.

I like the idea of a link to new Irish caches, as I am sure most people here would. Good thinking batman!
