When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Florida and the Bahamas

Post by CluelessTwo » Tue Jan 11, 2011 9:20 pm

We have just booked a cruise for April.
We start in Baltimore Maryland, sail to Port Canaveral, Key West, Florida, Nassau and Cococay, Bahamas.

Has anyone been to any of these and done some caching? We hope to grab as many as we can in the cities, although it will be all done on foot, so cant see us being windsocker like. We ave never been caching without a car before.

Is it worthwhile taking a laptop and looking for internet cafe's etc or just run some pq's before we go and stick with them?

Haven't cached in the areas you're talking about but have found one or two in the states 8)

Given the limited time frame you will have off the ship each day I think lugging a laptop around with you is unlikely to yield a big enough benefit. A careful weeding of a few PQs with caches selected for the areas you want to see at each stop will probably give you the most bang for your buck.

Would be interested in hearing about the trip on the forum as we're thinking about a cruise out of Miami into the Keys as part of our 2012 holidays.

Take the laptop. Cruise ships have wi-fi now.

Cruise ship do have WiFi but do consider a second mortgage if you plan to go down that route.

We cached for two weeks off the ship in the Caribbean with limited success although it’s very rewarding to get a find out there and pick up a new country. The cities you should be hitting are a lot larger than the small islands we visited so the range of caches should be much better. A lot of planning can be done prior to leaving home, create PQ’s download maps, etc. To ensure a good find ratio I’d pick low rated caches, virtuals and Earthcaches, nothing worst that making the effort to go for one only to find it has been muggled or unavailable because of muggles.

We brought a netbook with us but couldn't afford to use the ships WiFi, this can be up to a £1.00 per minute for short time periods, but you could make enquires before leaving about the specific costs on your ship or try trip advisor and look for complaints!!

I would also be very reluctant to carry a netbook/notebook off the ship as you can feel quite vulnerable in places you are not familiar with, with expense electronic gear, never mind increasing your chances of getting mugged. Having said all that I would still recommend a small netbook for off line planning and logging the night before and after you went ashore and to keep your GPSr up to date. If you are not flying direct having a computer around airports can be a hassle or a godsend depending on the availability of local WiFi spots. Just one final small consideration is how you plan to carry the laptop, in that it can seriously curtail what else you can carry as hand luggage.

We also had an iTouch and Phone with WiFi which were great while on shore to keep up to date with emails and Facebook. It is amazing how many free WiFi spots there are out there. The best way to find the closest hotspots to the ship is to talk to your cabin boy and ask him where he goes, or stroll about and look for large crowds of the ships crew sitting about on street corners with their laptops, skyping home.

Hope this has been of some use and PM me if you would like any further hints.

Have a great time, only wish we were going again.
