When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Glasgow..

Post by Spark_ie » Wed Jan 05, 2011 1:46 pm

Folks,

As some of you may know already, a move to Glasgow has been on the cards for a while now. This morning I got that offer to move to Glasgow, to work within the same department, but now based in Glasgow. I don't like preempting things like this, but it's a definate that I'm going, only a few HR things to be tied up now.

This move will happen at the end of Feb / Start of March.

I will be back in Dublin every now and again - to work out of our Sandyford Office, so will certainly keep an eye on any new caches popping up! However, I will be back in Cork much more frequently, as my Girlfriend will still be based there.

There's a post in the Event's section from a Swedish Geocacher (Hans), who will be in Dublin at the end of February.. I am thinking that I will host an event that will serve as both an introduction for them, and a sort of going away for me. No details as of yet, but suggestions welcome 8)

So yeah, it's been a great year and a half.. I think at this stage I've met 90% of the people on here, safe to say I've enjoyed your company on numerous occasions both at events and out in the field!

Dublin, and the surrounding areas, certainly has some fantastic caches. In fact it was Geocaching was the main reason behind me loving Dublin so much - I found so many cool places and hidden treasures (quite literally!). Keep the standard up guys and girls, and I look forward to caching here again in the future!

Hopefully I'll see a lot of you this weekend at the event, provided it's still going ahead.
Cheers !! 8) 8) 8)

You should definitely have a Cork going away event as well iff you will be in Cork again before leaving.
=D> Thanks for all the great caches in Cork and around it! =D>

Congratulations Mark. You certainly don't like staying in one location too long

Organise that event for early in the day and I'll make sure I'm there to see you off 8)

My cousin (AMAZO) operates over there, he has a brilliant sense of humour and he has planted a couple of caches that look like good craic.
