When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

I'm not even going to bother to ask whether anyone has any TBs to go there. I don't think I will be doing much caching, as unfortunately Fidel doesn't allow GPSrs in his country :(
There are a handful of caches there, none with proper co-ords. Might try to get one if I can.
Am also going to Mexico, and there are a lot more caches there luckily!

Oh dear - looks like I won't be doing any caching - don't want to risk getting my GPS confiscated.
There are only 6 or 7 caches there anyway, mostly in Guantanamo Bay.
There are a lot more in Mexico, which I won't be able to get to :(

Who the hell would want to go there on a caching trip?

Bummer....I'm sure you'll have a great time anyway.

My brother and wife went there last year for their honeymoon and loved it 8)
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."

Well cos it's technically US, and Americans can go there and bring their GPSrs! Only reason I would say....!

Booked my flights the other day to Cuba, going in November. (Woohoo!)

Needless to say, I think things are slightly different to when Fjon went in 2007.

8) Cool. How long are you going for?

Funny reading the posts from '07 (before we were on the forum, or caching even : ) ) I wonder how Fjon's trip went...

Still not that many caches on Cuba, but I guess there's more now than in 2007

Haha, that's an old post alright! I did manage to 1 cache without a GPS, and it looks like it's still there!

There are loads more caches in Cuba now, but mostly around Varadero (resort area - try to avoid!) and Guantanamo. And I guess they don't confiscate GPS units at the airport any more.

Hope you have a great time there, it was one of the best holidays I've ever had!

Yeah, really looking forward to it now - been on my to-do list for a while.

Going for 2 weeks, so should be enough to get a good taste for the place, naturally I would be looking to pick up a few caches along the way - see how we get on :-)
