When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

CROSSING THE RIVER

One day, three men were geocaching and unexpectedly came upon a large raging, violent river. They needed to get to the other side, but had no idea of how to do so.

The first man prayed to God, saying, "Please God, give me the strength to cross this river." Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs, and he was able to swim across the river in about two hours, after almost drowning a couple of times.

Seeing this, the second man prayed to God, saying, "Please God, give me the strength... and the tools to cross this river." Poof! God gave him a rowboat and he was able to row across the river in about an hour, after almost capsizing the boat a couple of times.

The third man had seen how this worked out for the other two, so he also prayed to God saying, "Please God, give me the strength and the tools... and the intelligence... to cross this river." And poof! God turned him into a woman. She looked at her GPSr, hiked upstream a couple of hundred yards, then walked across the bridge.

Reminds me of a "certain someone" on a recent hike to Knocknugan! Refer link:

Three guys out geocaching come to a river and want to cross it. However, looking at their GPSr they find that they are, apparently, already on the other side...

===> C'mon now! I like that one.

Funnies

One day a GRASSHOPPER is out Geocaching with his buddies in the Wicklow Mountains. After a long hop around the Fraughan Rock Glen area (where he stumbles across some full cans of Heineken) and with light fading fast, he hauls his exhausted ass into the bar of the nearby Glenmalure Lodge Hotel for a few pints to recuperate.

He pulls up a barstool and flags down the bartender. The bartender, totally stunned, comes over with a look of absolute astonishment on his face!! (He doesn't get many INSECTS in his bar... especially geocaching ones!)

Our hero orders 3 pints... but is met with total silence from the bartender. He tries to order again. Same result. Silence.
Until eventually the bartender finally says in amazement:
"Do you know that we have a DRINK named after you?!?!"

To which our hero replies: "What, 'ERIC'?"

(Think about it! Read it again)

Ah come on! A "grasshopper" is the name of a cocktail that you get in a bar. And the insect's real name is "Eric".

So - "We have a drink named after you "...
