When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Cache sizes

I have an idea for a cache that I'd like to place but I'm not totally clear about the size. While the gc website gives some indication as to the size of a cache there is no clear cut off point between sizes. As I haven't found any of the 3 large caches in the country I was wondering at what point in terms of volume can a container be considered to be large.

anything bigger than a standard lunchbox size i'd say its large. I guess that depends on whose standard you use too...

IMO anything bigger than an ammo box is large but since when did size matter?
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."

From what I remember, which varies, an ammo box is a regular size, most tablock boxes are therefore small (but ammo boxes come in different sizes, so are we talking air rifle or small rebellion size) Large is builders plastic bucket size and above. I have not come across a large cache yet, but If I can pull the finger out, I have a ~150L one to put out. i'll stick that down as a large.

I don't think size conventions are the same here as in the US. Most Irish cachers refer to a lunchbox as regular and an ammo box as large.

I don't think so - it appears there are only 3 active caches labelled as Large in Ireland, but there are many more caches that are ammo boxes.

I still reckon this is large enough to be deemed large

Where are the 3 caches rated as "large"?

"Derrycarne Woods" in Leitrim (don't remember it being that big though)
"Dromore church ruin and Eye Well" and "Donacavey Church Ruin & Burial Ground" in Tyrone.

Hmm, you people have got me thinking that the 2 Tyrone ones maybe shouldn't be classed as large. Maybe someone who has found them can give an opinion if they are regular or large. I honestly cant remember the exact size of the container, but were definitely bigger than most we have seen.

GC20Q2V - Poe Bridge is a large container with a micro in it.
Can't remember the other one you're referring to.
