When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Extract fom Daily Telegraph

Post by golaman » Mon Jan 18, 2010 12:12 pm

A friend sent me this extract from the Daily Telegraph 16.1.2010.

Vaughan, extract from Sat. Daily Telegraph, 16th inst. :

"Walking takes longer than any other known form of locomotion except crawling" .........geocaching is a hi-tech treasure hunt that is a long way from Anneka Rice, skin tight jumpsuits and helicopters. It owes its existence to computer and GPS technologies that enable anyone to find "treasure" left at specific coordinates by others. The "treasure" or "caches" are normally smallTupperware or ammo boxes containing a logbookand small items for trading. At the time of writing there are 953,077 active caches in more than 100 countries on all seven continents. As a pastime , it has only been possible since May 1 2000, when selective availability (SA) was switched off. SA added time varience to civilian GPS devises (so they couldn't be used ffor accurate weapons guidance), resulting in errors on the ground of 330 ft. If a rocket's heading in your direction, distorting its accuracy by 330 ft. doesn't seem much, but when you're searching for a small Tupperware box in the Lake District, it causes big problems. ... it got off the ground very quickly as the first documentation of a placement of a cache was two days after SA was withdrawn. .......hiding places are ranked on two scales: from one to five, based on the challenge of the terrain surrounding the cache, and the difficulty of finding the damn thing once you're there. location descriptions vary: some cryptic clues, etc. and some so isolated, requiring days of trekking over mountain peaks, underwater or 50 ft. up a tree. ........caches may vary from: "nanos" which are the size of your fingertips and " microcaches " which are the old film cannisters...... records for the most caches found within a 24 hour period is 413 or one every 3.5 minutes. ... there is also a problem of "muggers" (a non-geocacher) who specialises in cache interference. ... the world's leading geocacher has more than 37,000 registered finds.

This is useless information, most of which you know , but thought the figures were interesting. G

Interesting, a news report last month and now a paper article. looks like we may be getting a bit more company during the search.

I laughed at the bit that said "muggers, who specialises in cache interference"

That might turn a few people off if they think they are going to get mugged.

most caches found within a 24 hour period is 413 or one every 3.5 minutes.
Can anyone explain how this can be done. :!: :!: :?:

It takes me longer than 3.5 minutes to open the cache, write my name and then return the cache without being seen.
As caches must be more that 200m apart and with normal walking pace of approximately one minute per 100m, that's another couple of minutes for each one and where are you going to find 413 caches all in a row 200m apart that you don't need to look for. :?
They must have traveled over km - now that's one fit chap or chapess - as you wouldn't have time to get into and out of a car in your 3.5 minutes. 8)

I think if I was an owner of any one of the 413 caches I'd be out to check the logs [-X

There's an account of how it was done along with some photographs here:

I'm impressed - caching, photos, vodeos and they still had time to eat =D> =D>

Mind you I'd still like to check all the logs

Idly looking around the rest of his blogsite, and it looks like the record has already been broken!

http://emcofnorthridge.wordpress.com/20 ... -new-year/
By the way, I got a heads up that our record of 413 caches in 24 hours has already been broken – in Denmark and Sweden no less! Here’s the comment posted on my blog about it -

Author : Team Mojito
Comment:
Yesterday (28. december 2009) the danish geocachers Picht and Elmbaek found a record breaking 480 caches in 20 hours. 251 in Denmark and the rest in Sweden. 2 hours transport between the found places included in the 20 hours.

I wonder who's going to be the person who'll start one of these in Japan, then that night jump on a plane for America somewhere, arrive earlier than when they landed ( on the same day, time difference), and smash the record ! :?: :?: :?:

That's nothing - I've flown from Japan to Hawaii and arrived on the previous day.

Edit: That makes me think - there are lots and lots of caches in Guam. You could spend a whole day caching in Guam, fly to Hawaii or West Coast USA in the evening (there are frequent flights from Guam to Hawaii), and have another full day's caching on the same day!
