When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

getting permission for a cache

Post by Zoe andDaddy » Wed Oct 07, 2009 6:14 pm

I am looking at placing a cache, with lots o people on here having experience of getting permission for placing caches is there any way of having a knowledge base of who owns what and who to contact if we need permission.
I'm sure with the experience we have on this site we could cover most places and this would help and speed new caches being placed.

If it is in an open, public place then you don't really need permission.
If its on private property, you need to ask the land-owner, that counts for Coillte/Forestry services etc. too.
Nature reserves, ask the park rangers, once they know what you're up to, they're happy once you leave no trace.

Once you know where you are wanting to place it do your research from there, if it is unclear who owns it ie. you are in a forest but dont know who maintains it look to see if there any other caches in the area and message the person who placed it... etc etc if you are still concerned that you cant find the owner and are sure its not public property a rethink might be in order.

Knowing where you are based - if you want to place it on North Down Council land, I wrote and got permission for the ones I have (By Bangor's Bell and Cockle Row) Would you believe the request went in front of the full council! They have given me a name to contact for any further caches so we don't have to go through the writing bit again.

The one I want to place is on council land I think there is no signs. Yotter could you send me his details please.

Your reply is why it would be useful to have a place where this is stored make everyone's life easier.
