When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Hi Kersti...sure I'll set something up when I've caught up on sleep. If you don't see anything in a couple days just PM me a reminder.

With the number of milestones being reached perhaps we should have a separate 'congrats' thread?

What about a for sale and a wanted section. Where we can sell unwanted caching items.

Sure.....we can do that.

We actually used to have one but it rarely got used so I removed it and the general section was used instead. If any one thinks it may be of any benefit I can recreate the forum.

Is it possible to have all links in posts open in a new tab/window?

Is this something that needs changed in the code or is it in user preferences?

If you right click you can open any link in a new window or tab.

On a mac hold down the command key when clicking on a link.

I have an add-on in FF to open in a new tab with a click of the scroll wheel but all other forums I use open links in another window and I can't get used to it not doing so here :)

This is a browser setting. Try holding down the Ctrl key while clicking on the link.

Are you sure?

It worked the way I've suggested on the old version of the forum and also on other forums such as GC....they do operate different software though?

Actually, I was wong...kind of. If we were talking about a regular html link then I was correct. However, links are handled differently within the forum and they did work that way on the old forum. With the latest release the authors wanted to achieve XHTML 1.0 Strict-validation for the whole board and as a result you get this behaviour. It can be changed, but it means editing a bunch of stuff which I don't really want to do. You would also have to go and edit any existing posts with links so the post gets reformatted. Personally I just hold down the control key when opening a link. I understand it is an inconvenience to some, sorry about that.

No problem....if it's as complicated as that then it's not worth while.....I'll just have to get used to middle clicking :)
