When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Can I ask when the restriction on the above subject was brought in? :?:

Is there a restriction? I had no problems with my earthcache in Dunmore Cave where you have to pay admission (fairly little) and the accessibility is limited to the open hours. Also the virtual at Blarney cache cost me 10 euro, but I guess as it is old it was before many of the restrictions, although it would be nice to know the opening hours and fee from the cache site.

I was in doubt so before I started working on Dunmore I contacted an earthcache reviewer that had published my earthcache in Copenhagen, and he said it wasn't a problem.

A while back I queried the placement of caches in National Trust sites that require pay entry. It was confirmed that geocaching.com had determined it was appropriate.

Dunmore cave is managed by the OPW, a government organisation. Given the exemption for National Trust I can only assume the same applies to the OPW here ?

I guess so, but when I asked the earthcache reviewer I don't think I mentioned the place, just more general if it would be a problem.

Horrible answer but "it depends". If it's a reasonable fee (very subjective I know) and it's a non-commercial or not for profit operation then it is usually ok. This is why NT properties are ok.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."

I went to Castle Ward to log the caches there. At the gate I was asked for £7 for myself and £7 for my wife. I remarked that it was very expensive to park ones car and go for a walk. I was told that this price included entrance to the house. I told the guy that I had already visited the house and that I didn't want to visit again and that I wasn't in the habit of paying for something I didn't want but he very politely told me that that was the pricing structure. I left.
I was then very annoyed to see that on the cache page the cache is placed by Castle Ward NT and that it states that admission is free to members but they don't state the admission for non-members.
I sent them a PM but to date they have not replied.
If a cache is placed on a site where one has to pay admission I think then the admission fee should be clearly stated.

Yes I would agree that if an entrance fee is required then to the best endeavours of the CO the fee should be displayed, the cache in question having been placed by the organisation that runs the location has no excuse.

I remember going to see the Giant's Causeway (pre caching) and the price of parking was extortionate (I was on a motobike) but when I came back having decided I had come too far not to go see it, the attendants were no where to be seen so parking was free.
