When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

An early start in the Park

Post by Gerpod1 » Mon Apr 07, 2014 7:52 pm

Now that I am an experienced event organiser (ahem!) I was wondering whether there would be any appetite for an early start in May. I have signed up for the Pieta House Darkness into Light 5k run (or walk) in the Phoenix Park on May 10th. It kicks off at 04:15hrs  and I thought it might be a jolly wheeze to make it into an event. I know (or think I know) that an event can't be allied to any commercial or charity event, and have separately sought guidance on this aspect.

What I think might work, however, is a flash mob (a flash being a necessity at that time of night) in the Park, near the run location, and at a time that would allow any cachers who wish to independently support the (charity) event to do so, thereby killing two birds with one stone. And neatly sidestepping any restrictive regulations that might otherwise apply.

But there would need to be a modicum of interest to make it worth while...

Would there be a modicum of interest?

Can I bring my scooter? Also - be sure to set the "Night Cache" attribute.

i too am taking part in light into darkness walk/run in my case something in between event- this is a great event
under which the circumstances are not. its a great idea to have some members of the caching community taking part
and being represented - sometimes theres no harm with the two crossing over if the cause is right
sorry for ranting but this one is pretty personal to me - on a personal level .

I don't know what to vote.... but I'd be thinking along the lines of staying up all night until the event, then sodding off home

Sounds like a yes to the event.

I seem to remember a time when I would have stayed up the night before too but those memories are in black and white

Can't see what all this fuss about D/T grids is about  But that said such an early start would warrant an appropriate combo to reflect the general hardship and misery of the event ...

Since my name is down for the morning run already, I think it is a brilliant idea. Not sure if it will be an event for night owls or early birds.

Decision time. I've decided not to go ahead with this event following a call with the organisers. They had 4,000 people last year and expect a bigger turnout this year. Trying to get a handful of cachers together in the midst of this may be doomed to fail, especially considering the tight timeframes involved.

I will give up the slot to somebody else looking to put an event together on that date. But don't let this put you off taking part in the walk/ run though .... It's still a very good cause!

See you there

G.

As this event is going ahead , I thought I would try to sign up for the walk/run, but their website seems to be crashed. Any of those who registered able to provide details?

Tony - I just registered now. The link to 'register now' didn't work on their website but I went in via https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/darkness-in ... 0537747687
and was able to register still.

A fabulous night was had by all.
Well done everyone who turned out for the event & to those that continued on and completed the walk.
Special mention to our Nor'n Ireland cachers and our Canadian visitors who came along also.

Great picture. I knew at least one of them would work out. Delighted the event turned out so well.

Nice one :)
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."
