When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Easter Eggstravaganza VII

Post by Hezekiah » Tue Apr 01, 2014 12:13 pm

Easter Eggstravaganza VII, planned for Easter Saturday - 19th April, 2014 - is not going to happen, unfortunately. There are a number of my caches which are flagged as "Needing Maintenance", many of which are present and correct, but a new cache page can't be set up untill all maintenance is completed (if I'm understanding it correctly).

I'm not in a position to "maintain" those caches flagged at present, so it'll just have to be another Easter, I guess!

Sorry - I was looking forward to the outing too!

Of course, if I have interpreted all this incorrectly, let me know asap and I'll try and work around it :D

Yes, that's all correct i'm afraid.

There may be good news though. THE_Chris told me he volunteered to maintain all of your caches that are flagged as "Needs Maintenance". I had said I would help, but he has insisted on doing it all himself. Something to do with a new evil challenge he's creating to do with maintaining others caches...

If he manages it, perhaps the event can go ahead...

That. if it is possible, would be brilliant!!

Tight schedule though - 19th April minus 14 days = the end of this week, which is soon to be upon us. Needless to say, any supplies, logs, containers, etc., that are needed can be supplied!

Oh that would be a shame if it didn't happen. My daughter is finally old enough to enjoy it!
Lets hope The_Chris/ Abbeyackbar manage it.

Spot the date on Abbeys post! The troublemaker texted me today saying she'd found 10 caches, widening the gap between our numbers, the race is still on! (And she had the gall to ask for a hint as well! Flabbergasted at the cheek of some people :D )

Sadly, I will be down in Cork for Easter so I hereby nominate Abbey to take over my (assigned) post of Easter Event Host. It had better be a good one. And of course I will do a bit of maintenance on those of Hezekiahs caches which I can reasonably do should they need it (just like we all should as Good Geocachers). To take over a large chunk of them? Well, payment in the form of co-ordinates for Windsockers never-solved caches might have to be drawn up :)

The battle for Geo-supremacy between me and Abbey continues... she's only 10 ahead of me now... thinking I might catch up by 9 and match her cache for cache for a bit.

Sorry - what's happening here? Are you all saying that it's not possible to host an event if you have caches that need maintenance?
Also, I would love to see the Easter Eggtravganza take place. I was looking forward to it .... so what do we need to do to help make this happen?
Can we split up the maintenance?
What do you mean by "many of which are present & correct"? If they are fine surely it's just a case of marking them Maintenance done?

There does seem to be a lot that would need to be done in the limited days. Would they all need to visited?
What about Ein Stein and Litter basket? Isn't there works going on at Ein Stein & a clearance of vegetation at the Loneliest Litter Basket?
Would it be an option for someone else to put in the cache page in their name for you Hezekiah?

I think I have a solution that will get around the site restrictions and allow Alan to host the event as usual. I'll see if it works and get in touch with Alan direct tomorrow evening :)

Yes, well done Dino  Do you have a solution for me too! - my profile was hacked today! (lesson learned, "password" is not a secure password) All our cache hides are listed as owned by Red Fraggle, and they've changed our profile pic, location, occupation, as well as the stats on the profile page. Red Fraggle as featured Geocacher of The Month!

Red Rulz apparently. That's the graffiti on the page along with them altering their rank as #1 in Ireland, Europe and The World on cacherstats link on our profile.

It's outrageous!

Delighted Alan! We'd be very happy to do maintenance runs - especially over the school Easter holidays and can pick up any supplies from you as we're local.
Looking forward to Eggs!

Bit late to the party here, but I would be more than happy to do maintenance too - i think at least one or two of the caches are on or near my commute.
Looking forward to my first ever Eggstravaganza :D
