When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

We hope to see some more of ye travel over to join us in the Mega action on Saturday, but if not we'll catch ye on the flight home anyway!

Surprised how quickly we managed to get a full refund from Ryanair for our cancelled flights. It was definitely worth our while as even though we had booked as soon as Chris mentioned it, the new flights on the Friday evening and Sunday morning were way cheaper and we saved €140 by not allowing them to rebook us, even though we are still on the Sunday flight they proposed anyway!

Of course, we have spent that on the £110 family room B&B we have booked now for the Friday night, but kids are looking fwd to the Highland Games Event on the Mega site that evening. Hope a few others might have got money back out of Mr O'Leary and have him fund an extra event for us!

Good man Doug. G... booked way in advance in comparison to last Summer's camping event when that deluxe tent was purchased almost on the way to Wexford!
We're travelling Friday evening around 4.50pm with Ryanair and almost all will be returning on the 12.40ish Ryanair flight back on Sunday morning so hope to see you on board!
We booked a small car with Hertz too...

Hi BigAndyT,
I believe Odies Crew have quite a posse heading over the waves...
As far as I'm aware Doug G, sarahmur, The Mother and the four of us from tmsr will be flying on Friday with others landing on Saturday afternoon.
The Highland Games and Camping Event on Friday should be good on that evening if the weather is like this Friday evening, but I'm not sure how long we'll stay on Saturday as the Convention Centre activities look a little less fun. No doubt it will liven up for the Ceilidh on Saturday at 7pm once the second tranche of Dubs arrive!
Anyone else travelling - let us all know!

Thanks for getting back to me. Ihopefully meet up then with some fellow catchers on ferry. 'll have to attach a travelbug to my rucksack to mark me out as a cacher. Or is there another way to recognise a geocacher when not scurrying around in bushes? Also I've never attended a mega before, should I load up any PQs?
Also the thing that worries me most is where do I charge my phone up if I'm camping? How sad is that?

Lab Caches for Mega location on Saturday and Ayr over the weekend are set up to go live at 9am on Saturday morning 9am
https://labs.geocaching.com/Adventures/ ... de996e5b29

I noticed for those who are looking to fill boxes on the Caches by date hidden matrix ( Project gc and my geocaching profile) that Ayr has a lot of placements within 3k radius of town centre that are harder for us to come by over here (West Cork, Kerry, Ulster etc)
Of interest to us over the weekend that might be useful to others as well...

I've just noticed that the Céilí is sold out - anyone got other plans for the Saturday evening?

This is rapidly becoming anti-climactic...

What a pain..especially for those landing late for the Mega...
We discovered Commonwealth games tickets for interesting events were sold out ages ago, Celtic are playing Spurs in a friendly over in Scandinavia, so have booked a couple of shows at the Edinburgh Fringe and are making a day trip out of it so won't get back to Ayr until about 10pm.
If there's a post-caching nightcap, let us know where ye end up and I'll join ye once the kids are in bed...

Well, given I'll only be arriving at 16:10 - by the time I dump my bag and sign the Mega log, I don't suppose I'll start caching till tea-time.

I had a vague idea I would tackle that linear loop to the south of town. That said, there may be Lab caches to be logged on the racecourse... anyone interested in joining me on the loop?

And then for a wee dram? 8)

Hoping to pick up a few local ones tomorrow evening (Camping event is 20km from the mega venue) and Sunday morning if required, but will sample the local hostelry with ye when we get back from Edinburgh on Sat night.
Might get a lab cache or 2 around the racecourse area on the Saturday morning while we're there for the hour or so...
See some of ye aboot the toon...

Looking to bag the full suite of lab caches on offer on Saturday - and then generally get up to mischief on Saturday evening ;-)

Mischief sounds just what the doctor ordered Doug, or at least large volumes of alcohol
I will be at the ceilidh Saturday evening but will meet up with you after :D

Just took a look at the weather forecast - looks like it's going to be utterly tipping with rain... :(
