When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Sorry Doug - even your superdeluxe airtube spectacular wouldn't tempt M into camping so we'll be in the guesthouse or I'll be in the doghouse!

Ok - so camping is out. What hotels/B&B's have people actually booked into?

Nice to think that the Ayr Gatehouse is in Ayr which is in South Ayrshire. Surprised the postcode isn't AYR as well...

If people are interested, there is a ceilidh on the Saturday night and it costs £10 a ticket. Tickets can be purchased here:

Interesting event...wonder where it actually takes place. If it's out on the racecourse, we'd probably not stay with kids. Think we'd be back in Ayr at that stage.
Thinking of a day trip to Glasgow on the following day so must sus out some caches in the area to offset the shopping!
Could be tempted to travel elsewhere if there was something of interest, but we'll probably not bother with car hire for the trip.
There is a CITO nearby on the Sunday morning if you need to walk off the haggis after the Ceilidh...

Oh, balls...

Ryanair has been making unhelpful schedule changes, folks... they're now only doing 1 rotation daily - in the middle of the day, but at least the hours are human. I expect Chris will be disappointed. :P

The trouble is, the Mega ENDS at 4pm, so if you stick with those flights, you won't make it at all! I just rebooked, and am now going Friday - Sunday instead. Wasn't easy to get accommodation for the Friday night, since the Commonwealth Games are on too.

I didn't know the Mega ended at 4pm... this is now a total pain, so I just wrote to the Mega Committee asking for a special dispensation for us all... I suggest anyone who has not yet fiddled with their flights, hang on for a bit until we get a response...

Code: Select all

Dear Ayr Mega Committee,

Ryanair, in their usual helpful way, have reduced the frequency of flights from Dublin from twice daily (early & late) to once daily (late afternoon). As a result, a group of Dublin cachers who, in most cases, booked the early Saturday flight, now find that we arrive in Prestwick at 16:10... do you think there is any possibility that we will be allowed to sign the log for the Mega event after we arrive?

We'd be grateful for an early indication, as it has proven nigh-on-impossible to get accommodation for the Friday evening; if it is not possible, I imagine most of us will cancel the trip, at least saving the accommodation costs for Saturday and getting a refund from Ryanair.

We are discussing this problem on our Irish forum page: http://forums.geocachingireland.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3763&start=20

Many thanks,

GoldCircle

Thanks folks,
I'd been off line and hadn't seen the emails and forum chat. We have changed our plans as the visit seems kind of pointless for that short a stay and we'd miss out on the mega fun on the Saturday. I sussed out Aer Lingus to come back earlier and it was working out a bit dearer, so we've abandoned our plans to spend the Sunday in Glasgow and will now fly with our friends in Ryanair at 16.40 on the Friday and return on the 12.45 on Sunday.
Alternative to drive over seemed too much effort and I think those flights actually worked out cheaper than the ones we've requested refunds for.
We were lucky that when I contacted our guest house, the owner was able to allocate us a different (but apparently adequate large room - not ensuite, but private bathroom next door!) for the first night at a lower rate than the original Saturday night one.
That was a relief as family rooms were scarce when we booked way back whenever Chris alerted us to the Mega.
We're also now booking a small car for the stay as our train trip to Glasgow is not feasible and we might grab a local cache or two with the little spare time left.
Hope everyone else manages to make their rearrangements and come along to enjoy the event in spite of the inconvenience - (taking up Odies Crew suggested offer of a lift from the North might be worthwhile once you get a Ryanair refund),
Tony

Yes there was quite the severe panic this morning when that email came in. I will admit that a little of the HSEs time (on top of my teabreak and the entire of my lunchbreak) were spent averting crisis.

I've cancelled the Ryanair flights outright and rebooked. I'm flying into Glasgow with Aer Arann on the Saturday at crazy-early-hour and have rebooked the Ryanair home on the Sunday. Even with the Aer Arann flight being more expensive, the return flight is substantially cheaper than I paid originally so I'm only out about €30 extra even when the train from Glasgow is included. And there is a silver lining for me.... Glasgow is a seperate county for me to pick off.

Rightly pissed at the whole thing though, but it did work out ok in the end for me, even though the Sunday is now 'breakfast and go' rather than a fun day of caching :( Hope this doesn't ruin anybodys plans though and that everyone gets to go!

Good news!

I have had a reply from the very helpful Sam on the Mega committee and they will keep the log book open for anyone travelling on the reschedule Ryanair flight - so we can proceed as (re)booked. 8)

A Scottish solution to an Irish problem! =D>
