When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Eileen, did you not do Twinkly Lights already? Great craic when we did it and perfect night with great views over Dublin :)
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."

I'll be in the Deer Park on Saturday evening, we can sort out something then. The Twinkly Lights is not a looped walk so would involve a long walk uphill back to the start if you had to retrieve your car. Or a shorter walk downhill to the Deer Park if you did not ;).

Or could we use the good old trick of two cars... one at each end?

May have some bad news for those interested in Casana Rock on Sunday... the kayak rental crowd are "out of town" that day...
Looking at other options.

Actually - I take that back. The kayaking guys have come through. Need to be "confident" in your ability... or so they said ;-)

The assault on Casana Rock is all set to go for Sunday 20-Oct (the morning after the Milestone Event).
We are shaping up for an 11:00am departure from the RNLI slipway in Howth.
Gear-up from 10:15am for a 10:30am briefing.
Confirmed kayakers so far are: DougG, GoldCircle, Gerpod, The Chris, Gerlor and Fitzet. There is room for one more in a rented kayak. Let me know if you are interested. There will be a professional guide with us!

Come on, who's man/woman enough for it?

I expect, if we do get to go for it, there will be a crowd on Howth Head looking on with envy!

I did a quick measurement on Mapsource, its about 7km round trip to Casana from Howth Head, so this is going to be more challenging than Dalkey, theres no doubt about that! Will we make Irelands Eye as well? Who knows.

Does anyone think that the Ireland's Eye cache (GCKE1Z) should be a T5? I thought the guidelines said that if you need a boat, then that makes it a T5. Just noticed it is a T3.

An appeal: I have a large bag of trackables, 21 to be precise, that I was handed by the lovely Carly at Geoaching HQ and told 'get rid of these - they're in a race - they just want to travel far away'. So, I obediently did as I was told.

So, everyone attending the event is cordially invited to take a handful - especially if you will be travelling overseas, or live near, or will visit, tourist caches large enough to take some of these - a few are stupidly large - rubber ducks and the like....

Please, please, please... 8)

I would oblige but alas I won't make it due to birthday festivities on the day of the event, have a good one!

I too have a few, 4 to be precise, that I need to send on their way. They were recently relocated from Co. Sligo and wish to get out of Ireland to far-flung locations. One, in particular, wishes to be in a specific cache in Switzerland by 01 December.

I intend to deposit them in a couple of my caches in Howth (Howth Tramway Trail) that are regularly visited by tourists. If anyone else would like to take one, or more, off my hands, let me know, by posting to this thread, before Saturday.

I will not be going to Switzerland - the closest is the Danish/German border. I can bring them along if you like.
