When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

On Reflection (Phoenix Park Night Cache) Tue. 12th Feb 20:30

Post by GoldCircle » Sun Feb 03, 2013 11:27 pm

I fancied going to find 'On reflection, It's a Cache' http://coord.info/GC1HX3D - which is the night Cache in the Phoenix Park.

Now I may have form in skulking round the back streets of Clanbrassil St and the Tenters in the wee early hours of the morning in search of an FTF, but I don't have a suicide wish (savage deer, wild teenagers, wild deer, savage teenagers etc.) so wouldn't dream of doing this one on my own.

Would anyone care to join me before the evenings get any brighter?

When you thinking of going? We've done it - but in the interest of keeping you safe from the deer etc .... cause they're obviously all terrified of me ;)

I'd be tempted provided obviously that I'm free that evening. Night caching solo is an absolute no-no for me, so a group is going to be the only way I get this one.

I'm game ('scuse the pun) for most evenings, however, with massive snow apparently on the way, and with recent endless rains, I reckon Phoenix Park will be knee deep in mud for the next while - how about the week of Feb. 18th, hopefully things may dry out a little by then?

Any chance you could push it out to the next week? I'm in Cork most of the week of the 18th :(

Absolutely. Or we could do it next week. You pick.

After a bit of to-and-fro by email, the finalised date for On Reflection is:

Tuesday 12th February at 20:30

We'll meet at the parking at N 53º 21.405 W 006º 19.472.

All welcome! If you'r intending to join, perhaps you'd post your interest here, so we don't leave without you. (You'd never find a group of poeple with massive LED torches on a dark night, would you? )

Any last minute takers? Wellies are definitely a requirement; I spent an hour in Phoenix Park on Sunday and can attest to the water-logging: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx ... 14cf10f2cb

I think the logs say it all: http://coord.info/GC1HX3D

It was quite a lovely, if somewhat surreal experience. All those cold eyes just watching us. And the park is quiet and eerie by night, yet there were runners, cyclists, doggers and dog-walkers everywhere.

And we'd have been stuffed without Mervin's giant torch. Anyone considering doing this cache in future had better have a decent large flashlamp - a wee torch will not do the trick.

Delighted. Did a cache I never thought I'd do. Phoenix Park is so strange by night, pitch black but still alive with people. My first time night caching, certainly something I wont forget in a long time.
