When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Thanks for all replies, it’s good to have a bit of a debate about these sort of things now and again. My own personal view is that attending events via Skype is not the same as attending in person, I think everyone would agree with that.

Now the question is ….is this sort of virtual or remote attendance by Skype a substitute for actual physical attendance? Some say yes, some say no. I think personally think it isn’t the same and to attend an event you must be there in person to sign the event log book and claim. I like the idea of event caches as it introduces a social side to the pursuit which potentially can be a completely solitary hobby.

Now, I haven’t delved to deeply into the rules and regulations and I’m taking a common sense approach and I think people should take note of the spirit of Geocaching (What ever that might be – another days talk, no doubt). Some rules and regulation do need to be in place and heeded, its fair enough to say. We should note that clubs, societies and organisations with little or no regulation tend to snowball out of control with usually unpleasant consequences. No need to look any further than the international news over the last week to give an example of what can happen with respect to unregulated practices.

That’s all I have to say about that. Merry Christmas, Bren.

Thanks to an Irish reviewer for clearing up the cache page. Now only people who were in the pub that night are marked as attended, everyone else is as a note.
