When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Events on Feb 29th Feb - Which one to go to?

Post by Daithi2004 » Mon Feb 20, 2012 12:25 am

As you all know there are two events taking place on 29th Feb for obvious reasons. Can't make up my mind as to which event I should go to. I am asking you to put it to the Vote. I live in Dundalk and it is half ways between the two events. If you think I should go Dublin, just put a post saying Dublin or if you think I should go to Belfast, post Belfast. I will then decide on Tue evening going by the amount of responses. Can't be fairer that. Here are the two events.

I'll probably go to the one in Belfast so I vote you go to Dublin

(Belfast is better for the weekly shopping which I generally do on the way, more caches left for me to find up North as well)

I would imagine there will be a lot more people at the Belfast one, so might get a bit crowded! Mind you, the Dublin venue isn't huge either so if you're late there you'll end up standing too.

Which have you been to more often and which one has most people you've met before?

For either pick the opposite

I don't imagine any of the events will be overcrowded if you turn up on 27th - now, if you make it the 29th........

You could choose the one you can find more caches en-route to 8)

Dublin is a bigger venue - the milkshake parlour in Belfast will hold thirty +, but they'll be standing familiar as opposed to adjacent, if you get me, and there mightn't be much circulating done!

For me, it would be coffee and a seat - a milkshake standing up is a poor second!

Is there one or two events in Dublin? I thought I saw something about a flash mob also.

Flash mob was abandoned and I can't envisage what sum of money would persaude our reviewers to allow one to be published today with an event date of tomorrow [-X

PS. One of these would be nice too if you're supplying one of the above! ;)
