When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Newbie...or not so newbie...

Heya guys & gals
I've finally made it!... to the elusive 100 caches!
I read on our parent site, Geocaching.com that the magic number of 100 found caches was the required target to achieve, before you could start hiding your own caches. So, I'm now @ 108! Yippie!
Well, I suppose you want a bit (or a lot) about me.
I have been walking mountains for YEARS, and it was quite by accident that I re-introduced myself back to geocaching.
I signed up to Geocaching.com in November 2012 and together with my nephew, we sucessfully completed the local Bushy Park Native Trail multi, BUT while I checked out the map for future caches...they were MILES away & the next one I had planned that sounded interesting was in Tullamore! So, I never got there LOL So, I let my membership lapse for over a year!
It was around March, that I decided to have another look at the site & was totally amazed at the amount of caches, literally everywhere! On mountains that I regularly visit and indeed tracks & under boardwalks that I have been on too! LOL
So, I signed up again & here I am! - You have me for LIFE!
Jeez, I suppose I am such a newbie, when I have met other cachers on the hunt, a couple with just short of 10,000 & a German couple last week with 4,000 finds, makes my humble 108 disappear into insignificance *swizz!*
It's great to find the Irish site that you all frequent & I have spotted all the usual names from the logs: AbbyAckbar, Donnocha, The Chris, The Swerve etc & I do hope to meet you all at future events.
Cheers'n'Beers & Caches, - Yer_Man (John) :-)

Just remember, everyone who has more caches logged than you started with 1, and, for some period of time, also had 108 finds to their name ;).

If hill-walking is your thing, have a look at caches owned by 'kili or bust', 'Wicca Cailin' and/or 'Bilbos Apprentice'. Specifically the 'A Walk in the Garden' series, supplemented by the 4 Wicklow Challenge caches.

And try to attend an event. Like this one tomoorrow.
