When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Hiya, I'm Letty.
I used to live in Cork & some may remember me from the old days, when all Irish caches still fitted in one query.
I'm off to Donegal for the summer, so any tips are welcome!
Any caches I shouldn't miss? Dino?

Love,
Letty (who aten't dead)

Hey Letty, great to hear from you again!

How long are you spending in Donegal?

A few years back, Kili_or_Bust, SpyCaleb & myself walked the 'JB Glover' - a hike starting from Muckish mountain and finishing on Errigal. It was a long day, but it was absolutely beautiful, a great hike.

Lots of caches on that route too, including a stop at Loch Altan.

Other caches I can recommend are Slieve League (GCJ8RT) & some walks around Glencolumkille - there used to be a cache up at the martello tower, but seems to be gone now. Again, beautiful scenery :-)

Perhaps a trip out to Tory island could be on the cards too?

Hi Letty....welcome back  Are you back in Ireland permanently or just a visit?

What part of Donegal are you in and will you have a car? What kind of caches do you want to do - walky ones or park and grabs?
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."

Sadly, only for two weeks starting this Saturday! I'd love to go back for longer, but that would involve getting a job in Ireland, which isn't so easy in my field.

I'll be in Glencolumbkille, and have a car. I'd love a hiking cache but I'll be on my own, so should be relatively safe (no one man's pass for me  ), unless anyone feels like going along.
Second week is fiddling week, so only short trips then I reckon.

Good to see familiar faces!

Best, Letty

It's always been a dream to climb Errigal though! I'll have to look into that.

Letty! Welcome back! 8) Some of my favourite caching memories are of your caches around Kinsale area.

Glencolumbkille is lovely. I spent several happy holidays staying in the independent hostel there about 20 years ago. It feels very isolated, in a good way - on the final steep approach into the village you feel like you've left the world behind. I've never been caching in the area, but I remember going over Glen Head to a deserted village called Port (it may or may not be possible to drive there - 20 years ago there was a road but it was not maintained and was more like a track; in an ordinary car you could get stuck in the mud).

Heya,
Back from my visit! Turned out the programme (Irish/Culture and then fiddle week) was so full I didn't even have time to do a lot of caching, but I went to Port as you suggested. Lovely spot. The road wasn't too bad, but I can imagine people getting nervous about the lack of passing places.
First week I really should have taken the time to climb Slieveleague, but couldn't find anyone to join me despite the lovely weather. Did some cacheless hillwalking with the guide who works at Oideas Gael, which was great fun. Why no one has put a cache up near the Martello tower above the Glenn yet is beyond me!
I should get a job in Ireland again...

Best wishes,

Letty
