When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Android Phone, iPhone and Google Maps

Post by TomasIre » Mon Jan 14, 2013 6:40 pm

Hi,
Just new to geocaching - 6 found so far!
Background - I have an Android phone and my wife has an iPhone. We have the app installed on the iPhone but not yet on the Android. So, we're using the iPhone for now.
Here's my problem - using the paid geocaching.com app on the iPhone I identify a cache we want to find. The app will show us a map of the area but no turn by turn directions to get close. It only shows a straight line from current position to the cache. Is there a way to get Googlemmaps involved so I can get turn by turn while driving to the location? Is that any easier to achieve with the Android app? If so, I'll install that on my HTC One X.
How do you guys get to the general area or trailhead?
In advance, many thanks.

I'd recommend the Android app CacheSense. It uses Google Maps (among others) and I'm pretty sure it can also give directions. If you head over to the developer's forum he'll be able to answer your questions before you buy: http://www.zitafarm.com/forum/index.php

Hi,
Can you tell me why you are reccomending CacheSense? I'll take a look at it but not sure what I should be looking for (beyond the Google Maps integration). I assume it "integrates" with geocaching.com?

In my opinion it's far and away the best Android caching app out there. It integrates seemlessly with GC.com and you can use it for Munzees also (although I don't play that). What you asked for with the turn by turn directions I think is one of it's features but you would need to check on the forum as I don't use it and I'm not 100% sure how it works. Bruce, the developer, is extremely responsive and is constantly updating the app to add new features that people ask for.

A lot of others will recommend c:geo also but I've never used it as it isn't legit as far as the T&Cs of GC.com are concerned and I prefer to use an app that supports the site. It's only $5 now too (half price) and that's a lifetime license.

I have no connection to the app other than I like it a lot, I have a lot of respect for Bruce and I'm on the beta testing team.
