When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

google earth circle

Post by CluelessTwo » Sat Jan 23, 2010 8:44 pm

Im trying to find out how to generate a circle on google earth which will show an 80km radius from my home co-ordinates.
Any help will be apreciated and step by step guidance.

This is so I can see the areas I have set up Notifications for new cache publications.

Thanks.

Hi

I know this doesn't answer your question directly but the following is a simple solution if you have a Garmin GPSr and a copy of MapSource. Within Mapsource you can create a waypoint for any location - if you then go into the waypoint properties, more information and set the proxtimity to the required value and this will show a circle around the waypoint.

With google you may need to install google maps and set up a free account, then you can choose tools which will let you draw rings. It is a long time since I have done this though. Used it for "Trilateration".

Further to Sarge's answer, full members of geocaching.com can create custom queries around a cache, or coord (maybe even a postcode if I am correct) and select the distance. Similarily GSAK users will enable you to select any cache as a centre point, and use the filter option to set the distance amongst many other options. Clyde is a diety!

Quick google for "kml create circle" gave this as first hit....

Tried it and it works. Pretty neat.

When you view it in google earth, the circle will appear oval. Dont worry, this is correct
