When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Geocaching have also released a series of "Signal's Time Machine" caches around the world. Think these could become quite controversial though!

Joined in the fun earlier and logged a few...reckon they'll delete them after midnight...
A couple of our geocoins travelled spectacular distances this evening - looks great on the maps!
It could keep the battle for top Irish cacher interesting if those logs stand...

There's no way those logs will stand - there would be war! Of course, there will be war from the contingent who logged the hundred or so caches... must have too much time on their hands. Me? Instead, I was mucking about with lunch boxes around Ticknock today.

Before I left home, though, I logged a few Time Machines in exotic places that had nice souvenirs - I was curious to see them - South Africa has a particularly beautiful set of images.

I earned an ill-gotten favourite point - wonder what happens if I use it and go in to overdraft! [:D]

Oh good, they've been removed now! I'm sure there will be grumblings from people who logged all 90+ caches, but what did they expect?

It was a good laugh and most people took it in good spirits. There were some moaners but I think you will always get those!
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."

Having had the geokid log over a dozen of them with me, and happy to see them wiped at midnight, it looks as though there's been a couple of interesting side effects
- seemed to have picked up favourite points which weren't repealed
- Geocoins that travelled to visit these 'locations' kept the mileage on their clocks even though the maps and logs were corrected
- Having loaded them into GSAK, I've subsequently had to individually find and delete them to get an accurate badge display and find count again. I had thought that a subsequent my finds file would correct them!

Fun for her, but not sure I'd be bothered next April Fool's Day!
It'll be interesting to see if others keep their ill-gotten gains...
