When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

screwing stuff...

so I have this cache idea in my head but need to get it into made and into place...without giving too much away how would you take say a piece of circular wood (something like say a brush handle but twice the diameter of this handle) hollowed out, and connect them together in a screw type arrangement or some other way that the two pieces would stay together and a decent flush joint between the two?

You could go with a Bayonet fit, (lightbulbs use this)
Have the 'pins' (use 2 x screws) coming from the outside.

Too messy.
Get a plastic screw fit container; the sort of thing you use on the beach.
Hollow out both pieces to accomodate the beach thing.
'No more nails' it in place.

I'm with Johnrm on this one - drill out the wood to take the container.

All you need is the right container (or containers and a steady hand with a drill..........

Hmmm..... easier in wood than tufa - if you don't want them too fancy (loads of carriages, etc.), should be possible.

I'll get the elves working on a prototype and get back to you!

@barraseaclaid - I can have 8 of these ready for you by the end of this week. It'd be sooner, but I'm away for a few days.

You're looking at E3.00 each and postage shouldn't be wild (or maybe you're passing by?).

Nope - sourced through Google, an Irish manufacturer and stocked in my local craft/toy store!
