When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Re: calling all caravanners

Speak to Alastair74 and/or gilliancclarke! They're both into caravanning in a big way! Alastair especially knows all the technical stuff about towing them, servicing them and what to look for when buying a van. (He's been doing it a long time!) He doesn't read the forums though but you'll get him on...

Re: Fires In the Mournes

I really don't understand why people do this! Causing such devastation and destruction for kicks! So sad to see! Saw this on the local news! Scary stuff in Annalong Wood! Friend from the GIS dept. at work sent me this image too! The Mournes aren't the only parts of the country on fire!

Re: 3g topup sim card

I think "3" are the only such operator to offer such a deal in Ireland. 3 UK Contract in ROI 3 ROI Roaming Abroad But if I remember right some do bolt-ons that sort of do the same thing, 02 for example. Niall got one when we went to England last year if I remember! But maybe you could ask him? :? I'...

Re: Ask The Reviewer

Hi Graham, now that is good news. I am talking about http://coord.info/GC16CA, we did maintenance June 22, 2008 and visit the cache every now and then. Also http://coord.info/GCHEQ5 is flagged, it was sorted April 6, 2009 and we visited this one last weekend - all fine there too. Would be great if ...

Re: Ask The Reviewer

Quick question: it is not possible to log "Owner Maintenance" if you are not the cache owner, right? And it's probably not planned... Just asking because of these caches that have the "Needs Maintenance" flag and someone has done maintenance - but the owner is gone... Cheers, Axel Not normally but ...

Re: Ask The Reviewer

do i have to ask permission to place the cache? will i inform them anyway that i have done if i dont have to ask permission? We don't normally ask for permission just that you read the agreement and acknowledge that you have in a reviewer note. I've already published your cache BTW! Graham

Re: Dogs on the Mountain

I know what you mean! It's just annoying that the minority spoil it for the majority once again by letting their dogs chase livestock!

It's not hard to keep your dog under control!

Re: E.T. Series Gone

Blame the Nevada Department of Transport! They wanted it gone not Groundspeak!

Apparently there had been too many near misses on the highway with vehicles stopping every 600ft!

You didn't have any per chance did you?

Why not just do what I did and train your dogs properly so that they wouldn't chase or worry livestock? It's not difficult! #-o
