March 13th 2017

When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Re: New York

Off to NY myself now tomorrow, for a week - Really looking forward to it as you can imagine 8)

Not planning on any day trips out of the city, there's tonnes of stuff to do and see and there looks to be some nice caches there, and I've solved a few puzzles, but we'll see how we get on!

Re: Half Price IoM ferry

I would second Fjon's recommendation on the Isle of Man. Fantastic little place, with some really excellent caches!
I recommend the Coffee & Scone with clotted cream and jam from the small cottage cafe in Cregneash - Fab!

Re: I'm off to Skellig. Anyone care to join me?

I stumbled across the event today. We are planning an Ireland trip end of May/beginning of June and this event would fit more or less in our "not yet perfectly planned route". So I talked to my girlfriend and I think we will join you. On the way to Skellig I have to do an intermediate stop south of...

Re: dynamic leaderboard

Is that 917 finds in one day?

There's someone that frequents these forums that can even beat that record..

Takes a lot of determination !

Hey Jack, Welcome to the club! Yeah I think we all started off slowly, but then all of a sudden you're addicted and can't get enough :-) Good to see a new person in the Limerick area, and hopefully it won't be too long before we bump into you out in the field! Best of luck, and if you have any quest...

Re: Pocket Queries

Yes, it will give you the last five logs on all caches in the pq and will also give you any new caches that have been published since the last time the pocket query was published. (Also caches that have been re-enabled, if you requested that you only be given enabled caches)

Re: I'm off to Skellig. Anyone care to join me?

Would definitely be interested in this, and it's very coincidental, as I've booked flights for that weekend the other day with the intention of going to the Skelligs and spending some time around South Kerry (My girlfriend is from Waterville). In fact my plan is to spend time in Kerry and then make ...

Congrats to Eclectic Penguin on his 1300th cache the other day.. He'll be hitting his 100th Irish cache too shortly, so lets see if he can find more caches here than his current total for the UK !

Re: Cache Listings

Not a stupid question at all, in fact I wished some people would put a bit more thought into their cache listings!! I always aim to put a picture in the cache listing to give the prospective cacher an idea of what the cache is about, or the area it's placed in. Sometimes this isn't possible, ...

Re: GC.com Fraud

Actually, just noticed one very, very, handy feature of this new map - When you're zoomed a way out, you can click on the cache box and it'll give you the name and details.. =D> Last week you would need to zoom all the way into 200m scale to get the same info... (Which was a right pain in the arse! ...

Re: GC.com Fraud

http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=290409 Interesting little read Niall - it's clear that they had to change tack on the mapping solution, with over 2M hits a day! Personally I have no issues with the new maps, they have the same detail if not more detail than the previous ones. I...

Re: GC Feedback forums?

In fairness, I don't want this to turn into a GC bashing exercise, as I think in general they do a good job - it can't be cheap to run an office and hire a few programmers etc, especially if the annual rate we're all paying ($30) wouldn't even pay the salary of just one programmer for a single day. ...
