When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Caches Up For Adoption

I'm caching very little any longer and struggling to get the time to maintain the caches I still have live. A good few are older ones and possibly worth keeping alive. If anyone is interested in adopting any please email me through my GC.com profile. The full list is here: https://www.geocaching.com...

Re: Ask The Reviewer

Bonkers as it may seem attributes are not part of the review process and with the exception of a few (Wheelchair accessible, beacon and field puzzle) GC HQ have asked us not to delay publish because of attributes.

Re: Garmin Communicator Pugin

Garmin are no longer providing support for the plugin so most browsers will no longer work with it. I've had this problem with my cycling gps. I use garmin express to transfer files but haven't used it with my oregon.

Re: GPSr repairs

Although the standard 12 month warranty has expired you should be covered under the expected lifespan clause. It's called something else though. Where did you buy it?

Re: GPSr repairs

Garmin used to have a UK customer service office. Search the Groundspeak UK Forum and you should find information. Most of what I remember is from years back though.

Re: Milestone Congratulation Thread

Big congrats Niall, that's excellent. Actually, I would be willing to bet that 10 years from 0-1000 is the longest in Ireland - most people give up before then, or reach it sooner Thanks Fjon......I think ;) It kind of fits as it took approximately 1 year to find my 100th cache so I'm reasonably co...

Re: D/T balance

It might have been discussed at an event. I think I remember someone asking me about such a challenge. Wouldn't have been published as it's not verifiable and changes caching behaviour.

I'm pretty sure that the etrex doesn't have mapping capabilities?

Re: Ask The Reviewer

It *can* be organised but it takes longer than normal and we prefer advanced notice for caches organised in conjunction with an event. There's no guarantee your cache will pass review first time around and 4 days is tight as we don't review every day.

Why are you creating multiple events? It will show up in all the lists that folks use to see what's happening.

Re: Potential event?

No causes or agendas are permitted as drawing a line between acceptable and not is too much of a subjective judgement call. Eileen's event was a perfect example how to work with the guidelines to do what you want.

Re: Alan Shiel (Hezekiah)

As a mark of respect Graham and myself will be having our own version of a minute's silence for Alan Shiel (Hezekiah) tomorrow. For 24hrs we won't publish any new caches. Maybe folks could take some time to find one of Alan's caches instead and thank him for his contribution to the Irish caching com...

Re: Two quick Questions...

Q1. Already answered correctly.
Q2. It'll change on your logs but not on your owned caches. The Placed By field is customisable so you'll have to go back and change those manually.
