March 13th 2017

When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Re: It's nearly BBQ time again.

Maybe post the link here? Also, a lot of people hang around the "Geocaching Ireland" and "Emerald Isle Cachers" Facebook groups rather than here.

Another vote for keeping the old name. People will find it if it's part of a series or not.

Re: Milestone Congratulation Thread

Big congrats Niall, that's excellent.

Actually, I would be willing to bet that 10 years from 0-1000 is the longest in Ireland - most people give up before then, or reach it sooner

I can't help with that particular site, but there may be other options for you:

For UK/ Ireland I use "talkytoaster"

Re: 7 Souvenirs of August

Yep, now there are 3 girls in the household. Need to think of a new caching name - think I'll use Babyfjon.
I've also got leave for one event in August, and the CITO so all is good.
Let the sleepless nights begin.

Re: Logging caches as 'Found it'

That guy should know better with over 9000 finds. Or maybe that's part of the reason he has so many?
I would definitely delete the logs

Re: 7 Souvenirs of August

That would be good, especially if it's in Bray ;)
I see there's now also a Chatty cache published, so things are looking up.
My main issue is I am expecting baby #2 in the next 2 weeks so not sure how much free time I'll have soon.

Re: 7 Souvenirs of August

I'm hoping to get this one too. The hardest for me will be the Socializer. Last I looked there was only one Event in Dublin in August, and if I can't make that I'm not sure I can get it.

If you have a Garmin, Mapsource also does this, but it is a bit more cumbersome.

Oh that would be a shame if it didn't happen. My daughter is finally old enough to enjoy it!

Very interesting. If they weren't so far away from me I would certainly attempt it. Or it might make me take a trip out there some time, it looks pretty amazing. I see you were first to ascend some (all?) of the climbs. What grades are we talking about? VS or higher? And is a boat/ kayak required? U...

Strange, I am nowhere near that. Wonder am I missing some caches? 1. Pocket Query 6. IRL to Jul 27 2013 1.19 MB 987 30/Dec/2013 (2 days remaining) 2. Pocket Query 2. Re: 2013 New Year resolutions - review

Funny, just checked and my total for 2013 is only one higher at 335. I've no idea how I managed that many as I don't think I've done very much all year. Last year I only managed 201.

Re: Logging caches as 'Found it'

I personally wouldn't, as I wouldn't like to have more than one find on the same cache, but I'm not going to delete a log if someone wants to do it. In my opinion it's not really in the spirit of challenges. To me a challenge requires meeting a set criteria, finding and logging the cache, then movin...

Re: County Tops

Oops, yes you are Dara. Hezekiah and Bootle are still doing a small bit of caching too.
Anyway, there wouldn't be very many tops required to cover all of these, but finding people in the midlands that could place them and maintain them would be the hard part.
