When I established the forums in 2005 it was to offer a more richer web experience and greater functionality than the platform where we started this social adventure in 2003, Yahoo Groups. The forums were once a busy hive of activity and provided locals and visitors with a wealth of information just like the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook today.

It was a time where we didn't have the many social media platforms we have today, and it was a different time in terms of mobility and technology. There was no instant access to information, no Google Maps and a very limited base map on your GPSr. Mobile connectivity for me was a 9600bps Infrared connection from a Nokia to a laptop and in later times to a PDA using WAP.

As we moved into the social media era so did our forums users. Geocaching Ireland moved there too, and we have a thriving community on the Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group on Facebook. As a result, forum activity isn't what it used to be and I have taken the decision to disable new registrations to the forums and to make the forums read only so any information there can still be accessed.

The discussion hasn't ended, it has just moved. Join us on the Facebook Geocaching Ireland Discussion Group .

Re: Ask The Reviewer

Hi Nail.
I have question to The Reviewer ....

I would like to hide few caches based on challenge.
But this time not caches found .... but caches owned (hides)

For example .... " you need 20 hides to be able sign the log"

Is that kind of challenge acceptable ?

Re: Photo Game: Name that Castle cache!

That'd be the quick answer - it would have been obscure enough, but for tramyard and PENdragon placing caches all over the MCL area. Well done! Nice one :) And you are still very welcome here for some new ones in MCL area. We just located one castle in Co.Kildare ---> Barberstown Castle , PENdragon...

Poland - Wroclaw

Off to Poland (Wroclaw) next week. To do some geocaching as I am there. Have some TB and GC with me.
It will be my first outside of Ireland geocaching experience.
Opencaching http://opencaching.pl/index.php?lang=en is more popular in Poland but I hope to find some nice GC.

Re: Camping in Ireland

Hi Matt.
90% camping sites in Ireland are closed for autumn/winter.
Only a few (I know 2 only - in Dublin and near Rosslare are open all year long).
All the rest will be re-open next year in may or near.

All infos here: http://www.camping-ireland.ie/

Re: geokrety.org

Interesting idea to own free "travel bug". You can make you own trackable item.
Original TB are quite expensive in my opinion.
You can track them there on http://geokrety.org/index.php
You can log any found "geokret" (no need to register!).

Just made my two items. Let see how they go!
